Gabriel was dead. Killed by Lucifer to give the Winchesters time to escape the hotel with Kali. Castiel had heard it directly from Sam and Dean, but it still seemed impossible to believe. Gabriel was powerful. Gabriel was clever. Clever enough to be able to avoid all contact with their family for longer than Castiel really cares to count.

They say the first stage of grief is denial, and Castiel would even deny he's grieving for the estranged older brother he hasn't really spoken to in at least centuries. Despite that, though, he still leaves the motel room without so much as a word, just a rush of air as he takes flight. He can't even begin to imagine how many times, as the Trickster, Gabriel has faked his death, so he wants to confirm it for himself.

Within seconds, he reappears in the ballroom of the Elysian Fields Hotel. His eyes land on Gabriel, laying on the floor and he sighs. No, this certainly didn't look like another trick.

Castiel thinks about that for a moment and shakes his head, "I don't think times when you've had to be on your best behavior should count."

"Sure, eliminate everyone that would think that. Spoilsport," Gabriel says, pretending to sulk.

"I'm just trying to make it challenging for you," he shrugs, mimicking Gabriel's innocent tone.

Gabriel just side-eyes his brother at that. He's fairly certain that Castiel is just being difficult. Time for a change of subject. "Any chance of a Winchester dropping in to see what you're up to?"

Castiel shakes his head, "From what you said earlier, it sounds like they have what was in your video to keep them busy. So, no, I don't think so."

"Yes, I imagine that finding Pestilence and Death would be a bit higher on the list of priorities, wouldn't they?" Better them than him.

Castiel glances at Gabriel, frowning. "You sent them after Pestilence and Death?"

"More like I sent them after their rings. You know that Luci's Cage didn't disappear when he got out, right? Guess what the keys are." Gabriel internally congratulates himself on sticking to a twitch as he mentions their brother.

"It's going to be very difficult to get him back into it..." Still, it sounds like the best chance he's heard so far.

"Tell me something I don't know," Gabriel says with a roll of his eyes. "It's the backup plan for if my going up against him went in the toilet."

Castiel sighs. "Well, out of all our options, it's probably the most likely to succeed. I should go help them."

"Yeah, you probably should. And as soon as I feel up to it, I'm finding a deep dark hole to hide in." Then he'll be able to finish recovering and figure out what to do next.

"That is probably a wise idea." He hesitates then nods. "Take care of yourself, Gabriel."

"Be careful, those two aren't exactly a barrel of fun to deal with," Gabriel cautions. "And whatever you do, don't piss off Death."

"I'll do what I can. Thank you for the advice." He takes a glance around the cabin. "I'll ask Bobby to divert any hunters who might want to use this place elsewhere, so you should be undisturbed."

"I should be out of here in a week. Then if a group of hunters want to have a party, they can feel free." Although given that he's up to doing sentences without lots of pauses, he might be able to get out a little sooner than expected.

"All right. I will tell Bobby. It looks like your recovery is already going smoothly, but if you need anything..." He trails off.

"I'll let you know," Gabriel promises. "I'm surprised I haven't spent more time unconscious, but I'm not about to complain."

"Well, with nothing to do but watch TV, I'm sure you'll get plenty of rest." Especially if the TV continues to have nothing good on it.

Gabriel snorts before eying his little brother pointedly. "While I'm thinking about it and before you take off with it, I believe you have something of mine."

He could tell that Castiel had his Archangel blade because he could feel it on him. He didn't say anything about it before now because frankly, he wasn't in any shape to be doing anything with it. And given that Lucifer killed him with it, he's a bit leery of having anything to do with it, but he could hardly have the only thing that could kill him running around without him.

Conveniently, one of the few things that would kill Lucifer too. Not that Castiel really expects any attempt to kill Lucifer is going to go at all well.

"I didn't think you'd want me to leave it back at the hotel." He takes the blade out from under his coat and offers it to Gabriel, hilt first.

Good luck getting close enough to big brother to use it without getting kebabbed like other big brother instead.

Gabriel accepts it and sets it aside for the moment. "No, I wouldn't. The last thing we need is an unaccounted for Archangel blade."

No, definitely not a good back up back up plan.

"That's very true." A powerful weapon like that definitely doesn't need to fall into just anybody's hands. "All right - Unless there's something else you need, I should go."

"Nothing I can think of, no." He makes a shooing motion at Castiel. "Have fun storming the castle."

"All right. Goodbye, Gabriel." He manages a small smile and vanishes, back to the Winchesters and back to trying to stop the Apocalypse.
