Between thinking it best to steer as far away from the Core as possible given the current regime, and needing repairs to his ship, he finds himself on some backwater planet in the middle of nowhere. Not only that, but so far as he could tell, there were only a handful of cities worth the name with one of them being the capital city. Which was also oh-so-imaginatively named Capital City. It seemed to be his best bet, so it was the one he chose to land at.

While his ship was undergoing repairs, he heads out into the city. The workers don't need him breathing down their necks, so he may as well see what, if anything, was of interest. So lightsaber firmly hidden in his jacket, and anything the mechanics didn't need access to firmly locked, he heads out. May as well start with the market. Wherever it is.

It takes Garth'zel a moment to work out which Ezra was responding to, since 'it' wasn't very descriptive before nodding. "That works. You have somewhere safe to sleep tonight, or are you spending the night here?"

So he knows if there's a risk of tripping over a small child before he's properly awake.

Clothes fetched, he takes them to the laundry room to get them cleaned.

Sorry, Garth'zel. Eight year olds aren't exactly known for having clear communication skills.

"I got somewhere to sleep," Ezra says quickly. Safe is a relative term, but he thinks it's safe enough. Besides, he wants to see if Garth'zel will even let him go. "I just need my clothes first."

"After your clothes are clean and dry. There's not much point in getting you clean if you're just going to wear dirty clothes again," Garth'zel says firmly. He knows that sometimes there's not much choice, but this time, clean person and clothes is able to happen.

"How long do I gotta wait?" he asks. He honestly doesn't know the answer. He doesn't have a clear memory of how long it took his mother to clean his clothes before. She just took his clothes and then handed them back later. It wasn't something he paid attention to. "An'- an' what do I do until then?"

"Somewhere under an hour. Since this isn't a full load of clothes, they don't need as much time. I need to see if the washer will let me set it to spend less time than usual since they're only a few things. Otherwise, it'll take around half an hour. Should be able to get the dryer to take about fifteen or twenty minutes though, since I doubt they'll need the full half hour." Probably more information than wanted, but oh well. Ezra can't say he isn't being kept informed.

As he talks, he gets things sorted out so that the cleaning can happen. "I have a dejarik board. Has anyone taught you how to play?" He's a little short on things for a small child to do for fun on board the ship.

Yeah, just a little more information than he wanted, but he did ask. And it did give him an idea for how long he can expect to be stuck here before he can leave, so he's not going to complain about Garth'zel talking too much.

No, instead he'll switch his focus to the question he just got asks. Ezra shakes his head, but perks up, interested. "No. I seen some people play in Old Joh's, but they wouldn't let me play." So he at least has a concept of what the game's about, but no firm knowledge of the rules. "Will you teach me?" A game sounds like the best way to pass the time, but he's not sure if Garth'zel's offering to teach him here.

"That was the intention if you didn't already know how to play, yes," Garth'zel says with a nod as he gets the washer started. "Looks like this part is going to take the full half hour. That gives plenty of time for you to learn the basics and get some practice in so you can play the game properly."

Ezra's face lights up. Dejarik is one of those games that's always looked like a lot of fun (because let's be real, what little boy doesn't want to see monsters battling it out?) but he's never had anyone willing to take the time to teach him how.

Already, Garth'zel is rising higher in Ezra's regard.

"Then let's go play!" he says, excited, and he even frees up one hand from his box of food so he can reach up to take Garth'zel's hand, so that he can tug him along faster.

Garth'zel blinks as he gets pulled along. He can't say he was expecting that. "You want to go back to where you found me."

Also known as the lounge. Where people entertain themselves outside of their rooms.

Better get used to it, Garth'zel. Ezra's only going to grow more bold as he gets used to you and starts feeling out boundaries.

"Okay! I 'member where that is!" And he does. It's not just childish boasting. There's a decent memory in that brain of his. Good enough that he leads them unerringly back to the lounge, even though he's only been there one time.

His eyes spot the dejarik board quickly enough, and that they're here, he lets go of Garth'zel's hand in favor of climbing into a seat at the table. "Can I turn it on?"

"You mean may you turn it on, and yes, you may," Garth'zel says, seating himself across from Ezra, taking his reader off the dejarik table to set it aside.

"We'll go over the controls first, and then..."

And so it goes for the next half hour until Garth'zel checks his chrono. "Time to put your clothes in the dryer. Still want to play, or do you need something else to do?"

Can, may - whatever. Ezra got permission. That's all he cares about.

The next half hour is one of the most content Ezra's experienced in a pretty long time. He's clean, his tummy is full, and he's getting to play a game with someone, someone who's willing and happy to pay attention to him. Really, what more could a little boy want? After a half hour of that, though... Well, maybe his attention span could use a little break.

"What else is there to do?" he asks, not quite sure if he wants to quit the game.

"Not much you'd be interested in, I'm afraid. I don't really have anything on board for children." Considering he neither is a child or has one.

"I suppose there's reading if you think you won't get too bored."

Ezra weighs the option for a good several seconds, but the truth of the matter is that he's only eight years old. His reading level is still elementary at best, and somehow he doesn't think Garth'zel's got any anything that Ezra would want to and could read.

But you just don't tell people you don't know stuff when it's gonna make you look bad, so he shuffles his feet and shrugs. "We can keep playing. I'm having fun." Even if he's not good at it yet.

"All right. You know where to find the galley if you want to drink more of your juice if it's been long enough for you to be thirsty again," Garth'zel says as he rises from his seat. "I'll go toss your things into the dryer and come back."

Whether or not Ezra's thirsty is hardly the point. Ezra's hardly going to turn down a chance for more juice. That's not something he can take with him as easily as food, and he still can't help but think like a kid on the streets, that he needs to take advantage of opportunities for food when he can, because he doesn't know when he'll get one again.

"Okay!" he says quickly, getting up from his seat, too. His hands dart under the dejarik table for his box of food - still saving it, but not willing to leave it unattended. Another hangup he can't get over yet.

So while Garth'zel is busy, Ezra busies himself, too, finding and drinking the rest of his juice.

And maybe investigating the galley for a few minutes. You know, just looking. He just wants to know what's there. (If Garth'zel comes looking for him, he's likely to find Ezra poking his nose into a storage cabinet. Otherwise, the boy will head back to the lounge once he thinks it's likely that Garth'zel will be back too.)

It really doesn't take long at all for Garth'zel to move the clothes and set the dryer for fifteen minutes. They might need more time, but he rather doubts it. For all he knows, fifteen minutes is more than enough time.

After stretching out with the Force to see where Ezra was, he heads for the galley, raising an eyebrow at him. "I'm going to need to teach you how to sense the location of other people, I see." Given he just caught him rummaging through the cabinet.

Ezra jumps a little when he gets caught with his head inside one of the cabinets. With a hasty jerk of alarm, he pulls back out and whips around. "I didn't take nothin'!" he quickly protests. "I was just looking! Honest!" And really, it's true! But he's used to expecting people not to believe him when he says he's innocent.

Garth'zel's eyebrows just slowly go up as he crosses the galley to rinse out and set Ezra's glass aside. "Don't forget to breathe."

As opposed to panicking.

Ezra stares up at Garth'zel. What does breathing have to do with anything?

"I'm not forgetting." Who forgets something like that? "I promise, I didn't take anything. I don't even have any pockets."

"That basically meant calm down and don't hyperventilate." In other words, stop panicking.

"I may already be aware that particular shirt of mine doesn't have pockets," Garth'zel says dryly.

Sarcasm and young children don't always mix very well, especially when the child isn't very familiar with the person using it. All Ezra gets is that he may be getting made fun of here, and he scowls as much as an eight year old can.

"That doesn't mean you believe me," he says, hunching sullenly. "You could still say I took stuff an' hid it, or- or put it in my box."

Garth'zel bends over to be eye level with Ezra. "Well, did you hide anything in the box you're borrowing?"

Besides what was supposed to be in it, obviously.

Ezra lifts his chin defiantly, daring Garth'zel to call him a liar. "No, I didn't," he insists stubbornly - and he didn't. All he has in the box he's borrowing is the food he put in it originally. He doesn't steal from people who are nice to him.

He wouldn't steal at all if he didn't need to to survive. Unless maybe someone really deserved it, like the Empire.

"Then I don't see the problem," Garth'zel says, straightening back up. "Ready for more dejarik, then?"

Assuming Ezra doesn't decide he needs to burn off his energy somehow.
