But Gabriel had actually sat down--which alright, didn't mean that he looked like he was about to fly out the nearest window in panic, but it was still a very fine line.
He reached across. His hand settled on Gabriel's knee.
Gabriel's pretty sure that someone would notice a guy jumping out of a tenth floor window in a crowded and busy city.
He manages to limit himself to just looking down at his brother's hand and then looking back at him, eyebrow raised as if to ask 'well?'. Lucifer's move.
Pish posh. It's New York City. People don't even notice a messenger bicycle before it hits them right in the face.
Gabriel looked back up at him, and Lucifer felt the question. His jaw tensed briefly, unsure of what his next move actually was. Fate wasn't really talking to him, recently.
He didn't know what he was doing, so he withdrew his hand suddenly, like Gabriel had slapped it.
You're giving Gabriel all sorts of mixed signals here, big brother.
"Either you want to get grabby, or you don't. Pick one." Even as he talks, he has the sudden realization this was difficult for Lucifer too. On the one hand, good; it should be. On the other...
Gabriel scoots back on the bed, laying on his back and folding his hands behind his head in a show of casualness he doesn't entirely feel. "What do you think are the odds of being locked into this room until we got our shit sorted if anyone we know knows we're both in the same spot?"
He did want to get grabby. Where was that decisiveness now, anyway? But Gabriel leant back on the bed, just lay there looking like he didn't care less, didn't care what Lucifer did. He wasn't sure whether he believed the casualness he was seeing.
"I think if they locked us in here," he said, casting an upward glance. "Then one of us would die. And since I promised not to hurt you, it'd have to be me."
He stretched out beside his brother slowly - very, very carefully, propping his head on his hand so that he could look uncomfortably down at Gabriel.
"I don't want to kill you. I never did," he says quietly before there's a fleeting grin as he realizes that he just quoted a movie. He should probably watch it again sometime.
"There's no booby traps on or in the bed, if that's on your mind." Deliberately misinterpreting Lucifer's discomfort, yep.
It was like he was given permission to cast aside some of what had gone before. All the killing... But now he folded into Gabriel, and folded his hands across his chest, and rest his chin on the back of them, looking up at him. Cool eyes, absolute attention and focus.
It went to show that maybe Gabriel was starting to tentatively trust him after all, if he was closing his eyes like that. Lucifer took it as a sign, and pulled himself upward, pressing his nose into the crook of Gabriel's throat.
"So I've graduated from archangel to blanket? That's good to know."
"You're the one laying on me," he points out, tilting his head back and moving his hands out of the way to do so, one hand tentatively resting on his brother's back.
"It seems like I got what I wanted from you after all. A hug." Although this was better than a hug. Better than the last time they'd embraced like this. Neither of them was trying to kill the other, for one thing.
He exhaled into his brother's hair, then tipped his head, bluntly grazing his teeth against Gabriel's jaw. He'd promised not to hurt him, so he couldn't, and his mouth was soft. "What if I've changed my mind?"
He noticed the change in tension, when it happened. Not so much Gabriel's anxiety any more as something very different. Just tension. So he did it again, to see if it was just a fluke, and then sighed into Gabriel's ear.
"I want to know what new tricks you've learned, since I stopped teaching them to you."
A shudder runs down Gabriel's back this time and he catches himself before he rocks up against his brother. "I've gotten better at my constructs. Making them seem more real."
As seen by the fact he got out of the hotel alive. Badly injured, but alive.
He noticed the shudder, even though Gabriel was still holding himself back. But that was okay, Lucifer was patient. Lucifer was just feeling his way through this, testing his brother, and it was working so far.
He moved up, and kissed the corner of his brother's mouth. "Show me, Gabriel."
"You fell for the snake, didn't you?" Gabriel teases, his free hand now resting on the back of Lucifer's head. "And where do you think my furniture came from?"
"I hate your furniture," he answered, and ignored the rest of the question, such as it was. He kissed Gabriel then, light and questing, and very brief. He pulled back to look at him, almost as though he was asking if it was still okay.
"If I didn't trick you, you would have come looking for me to finish the job and I was in no shape to fight you off," Gabriel points out after Lucifer kisses him. "I'm really me. There is no real me hiding in a closet or on the opposite side of the planet."
He paused, looking down at his brother, paying very close attention to his face and what was underneath it. He'd been so sure last time, but it had been a trick. Now Gabriel said it was him. It had to be him, didn't it?
Gabriel wouldn't lie to him.
Hahaha
And once more he closed his lips on Gabriel's, lingering now, bringing his hand up to wrap around his brother's jaw, his touch as gentle as the brush of feathers.
Okay. That was definitely okay. It was still very experimental - not that Lucifer didn't know how to sin, but this was still his brother, still Gabriel. So he took it slowly, asking for Gabriel to open his mouth, sliding their tongues together, a catch of teeth on teeth.
Always gentle, because those were the rules he'd laid down, and he didn't expect Gabriel to release him from them. This was the reunion he'd been hoping for; not deceit and betrayal.

He laid his free hand in the center of his brother's chest.
"It's been a long time."
